The opening ceremony of the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port (Phase I) in Djibouti, Africa was held in Djibouti City, the capital of Djibouti, on the 24th. Djibouti President Guelleh and many Djiboutian dignitaries, Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Fu Huaqiang and representatives of Chinese enterprises, and dignitaries from Somalia, Ethiopia and other countries attended the ceremony.
The Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port (Phase I) project was undertaken by China Construction and is the largest port project undertaken by Chinese construction companies in Northeast Africa so far. The project officially started in August 2014. The port's annual designed cargo throughput capacity is 7.08 million tons and its container throughput capacity is 200,000 standard containers.
Since the project started, the builders from China have faced difficulties such as the extreme environment of "explosive" high temperatures, extreme scarcity of living resources, and all production resources relying on imports. They carefully organized the construction with Chinese responsibility and Chinese standards, and completed the main wharf and all the building construction and road yards in the contract at an astonishing speed, laying a solid foundation for the trial operation and official opening of the port area.
Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa and is an important link between the Asian, African and European markets and an important node of the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road". The smooth opening of the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port (Phase I) will provide an important transportation foothold for Chinese companies to expand into the African continent market and will also boost the economic development of Djibouti.
